Hawksbill Pottery

Clay

Hawksbill Pottery produces a unique collection of handcrafted stoneware. Some pieces are thrown on a potter’s wheel while others are hand built with slabs and extruded pieces. Each piece is embossed with original designs and hand painted with lead free studio mixed glazes.  Our glazing technique is similar to a batik process. A variety of masking materials are used between layers of glaze to create colorful designs and patterns.  All pieces are ovenproof, dishwasher and microwave safe. Unlike earthenware, stoneware has been fired to a very high temperature, vitrifying the clay to create a strong and durable finished product.  Each piece is painted free hand with a brush, giving spontaneous life to each piece. We believe this direct process infuses the object with human energy. If cared for properly, your piece should last a lifetime and be enjoyed by generations to come.

Kara Wood Designs has been creating wonderful woodwork for over 20 years. All of the shapes and patterns are original designs done by John Kara. The business started in the early 1990’s and consisted strictly of collapsible baskets. Years later, John got the idea to angle-cut different shapes such as angels, trees and crosses. We work in an individual studio where we use hardwoods and laminations of hardwoods to make the artwork.

Darr’s products are handmade from start to finish using original recipes. The soaps and lotions contain no animal fats and are scented with plant essential oils or cosmetic grade fragrances. Each hand cut bar weighs at least 3.75 ounces and is wrapped in cotton fabric with a recycled paper wrapper. The vegetable oils are non-GMO certified; fragrances are phthalate free, and palm oil is RSPO sustainable.  Parsonage is a multi-generational family business based out of Lovettsville, VA that has created soaps, lotions, and other scented goods since 1997. Parsonage has a penchant for botanicals, and curates each soap variety to provide well-balanced, complex scents inspired by our natural world.

Wood

Working with a wide variety of Southern hardwoods, Johnson creates a wide assortment of both hip high and tall walking sticks. Each is unique, as the wood reveals its qualities. The characteristics of the wood, such as thigmotropism, determine the final form. Often various shapes are carved into the handle or the top of a hiking stick, as suggested by the wood’s form. At times, items or personal mementos are incorporated into custom made walking sticks. Also, wood or horn may be bent and shaped to complete the walking stick. The finished product is a unique heirloom suitable for daily use and meant to last for generations. In Johnson’s demonstration, he conveys both the history and lore of the woods such as the American Chestnut, so that it too may be carried on to future generations.

Fiber/Textiles

Proctor thinks of quilts as paintings made of fabric. The technique of quilting layers of fabric to produce bedding, clothing, and even armor can be traced back centuries. She is inspired by early quilt makers who produced functional pieces that were also truly beautiful, often made with scarce or repurposed textiles. The quilts are based on traditional quilt block designs. They may use a variety of fabrics and colors or may be simply two fabrics. Proctor want the quilts to be used. They are not intended to be stashed away and they are not just bed coverings. She uses machine piecing and machine quilting techniques. The fabrics are all cotton and battings are mostly cotton. Her hope is that the quilts are enjoyed by others and that this early American art form is carried forward in future generations.
